Heavy rainfall has forced a one-week delay in the scheduled reopening of the First Niger Bridge, following disruptions to ongoing maintenance work on the facility. The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Mr. Timothy Emenike, disclosed the development during a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria.

He explained that downpours have severely impacted construction progress, as work must pause for a day or two after every heavy rain to allow affected areas to dry. Despite the setback, Emenike assured the public that the contractor remains fully equipped and committed to finishing the job.

He appealed to motorists and commuters to exercise patience and continue using designated alternative routes. The First Niger Bridge was temporarily closed on September 7, 2026, for a two-week emergency maintenance exercise originally scheduled for completion today, September 21.
