The Anambra State Government has issued a flood alert to residents following a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which listed the state among those likely to experience above-normal flooding this year. The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka.
He said Anambra’s location within the Niger Delta belt makes it particularly vulnerable to flooding, adding that the state government has begun proactive measures to reduce the impact of the anticipated floods. Dr. Mefor urged residents to take NiMet’s warning seriously and remain vigilant throughout the rainy season. He advised people to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall, whether on foot or by vehicle, to reduce the risk of accidents and loss of life.
The commissioner also called on residents living in flood-prone communities to relocate to safer areas where necessary and to seek emergency assistance promptly whenever the need arises. He reiterated the Soludo administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while appealing for the cooperation of residents in preventing avoidable casualties and property damage during the flooding season.
